I’d like to talk about Dragon*con one last time....

arcaneimages:

I’d like to talk about Dragon*con one last time. As I’ve said before I will not ever attend this con because Ed Kramer who awaits trial for child molestation still receives money from Dragon*con. To me it’s so obvious. Children’s safety comes before anything else, including my need to attend a con, wear a costume or whatever.

Seems obvious but so many, too many so-called caring fans are not only still giving money to this con, but actively defending it. If you want your money to go to the defense of a child molester then I have nothing to say to you. I find it disgusting. Dragon*con and those who defend it are a scar on fandom that makes me ashamed to be a fan.

Believe me, I am sympathetic to the innocent victims of what Kramer did, not only the kids, but also fans and con organizers. But what’s done is done. It can’t be fixed and can’t be swept under the rug so it’s time for Dragon*Con to grow a pair, step up to the plate and do what’s right. New con. Same city. Done.

So you don’t think I’m just blathering off, I have been in a situation like this. A few years back I did several books for a major publisher. One day I turn on the news and bang, the artist had been arrested for distribution of child pornography. I didn’t bitch and whine about how it affected me. Instead we all agreed it was best for those books to go away. That’s what had to be done. For the kids who this animal violated. It’s not about me keeping a book in print and lining my pockets. It’s about doing the right thing.

So there’s that. I’m sorry a long running popular con has a pedophile in their ranks, but instead of continuing to victimize these kids (now men seeking justice) it’s time for everybody in fandom to show the world we aren’t a bunch of selfish nerds, but caring humans who love and respect others. Is that so much to ask for?

The way we spend our money is very powerful. Let’s use that power for good

Thanks for listening.

-Steve

This will be a boring, joke-free post because I’m under a couple of hard deadlines. Here is where to have my sweet, black sharpie make love to the front of your Deadpool & Infinite Horizon comics:

1) I’ll be signing with Brian Posehn at Wondercon on Saturday March 30th at Beach Ball Comics’ booth 125. We’re going to start signing at 1PM for at least a couple of hours.

2) I’m a guest at Planet Comic Con in Kansas City. I’ll be there all weekend long. It’s at Bartle Hall in Kansas City on April 6th & 7th.

3) I’m signing with Scott Koblish, the wonderful artist of Deadpool # 7 in Manhattan Beach at The Comic Bug on April 3rd from 5 to 8 PM. That’s the date that issue 7 drops. It’s a really fun issue, and Scott CRUSHED the art. Their address is: 1807 1/2 Manhattan Beach Blvd., Manhattan Beach, California 90266

4) In June I’m a guest at Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con from June 14-16. For more info go here:

South Point Hotel & Casino

9777 Las Vegas Blvd South Las Vegas, Nevada 89183 Info@AmazingLasVegasComicCon.com

I didn’t get a room for San Diego Comic Con, so my trip is in doubt. I MIGHT sign at the Marvel or Image booth for one day if I take the train down from Los Angeles, but please don’t count on it.

Thanks, hopefully catch you at one of these signings or shows.

Regards,

Get them while the gettin’ is good.

I will have a VERY small amount of Deadpool # 1 to sell courtesy of retailer buddy. If you to have us sign Deadpool - please plan to bring the comic with you or buy it at the show. I think I have less than 20 copies.

Brian and I will sign all your Deadpool, and we’ll have some copies of Last Christmas for everyone that needs it. Brian’s also selling compact discs of him talking about his penis and the unfortunate things his body does.

I will also have softcover Infinite Horizon, and a very small quantity of the limited hardcover that was exclusive to last year’s Emerald City.

On Saturday morning at 11:05 Brian & I are guests on CB Cebulski’s Marvel panel in HALL B (608-610) We’ll probably say something stupid.

We’ll be back at our table for the rest of the day before heading to our own panel on Comedy Writing Saturday night at 7:30 in HALL A (611-614) I KNOW we’ll say some dumb things at this panel.

On Sunday I’m signing at Infinite Horizon at Image Comics (booth #1100) from 1 to 1:45 PM.

Come unfollow me in person!

Regards,

Issue 6 of Deadpool hits on March 20th. You’re going to buy it. Tony Moore leaves us temporarily and he’s going out with a bang. It’s his best work. Period. Things started to get a little heavy for Deadpool in issue 5, and that trend will continue.

Two weeks later, issue # 7 hits on April 3rd. It’s a flashback back to one of our favorite stories in our favorite eras of Marvel Comics. As you can see from the legendary Kevin Maguire’s cover below — we’re telling a Deadpool story that takes place back in the classic “Demon In A Bottle”. It will be fun for everyone! Except Tony Stark - who’s having a hell of a time. The idea behind this issue, one written & drawn in the 80’s but not published until now came from our editor, Jordan D White. This issue has a lot of guest stars & surprises we don’t want to spoil. We had so much fun we’re thinking of going back and playing in some different eras as stand-alone issues between arcs moving forward.

Seriously LOOK AT THIS COVER.

Scott Koblish does some genius work on the inside of this book. We’re proud of the shenanigans, and it’s not just a one-off comedy. The events of this 80’s issue lead right into the next arc. Don’t let it sell out on you - please pre-order it.

Two weeks after that, the second arc begins with issue 8, and some damn fine work from Mike Hawthorne. This issue keeps things personal for Deadpool…and opens up a mystery. I don’t want to say any more than that. So please — PLEASE pre-order these books with your comics retailer. And now — a cover by ART ADAMS!

Tony Moore drew his damn face off. His first arc is our favorite thing he’s ever done. Of course, we’re not objective… We’re grateful for the response to the first six issues, and especially to Tony for getting Brian and I underway on Deadpool with the absolute best art possible for that story. You’ll see more of Tony & Deadpool later on…

We also want to thank Val Staples & Joe Sabino for their excellent work. Please pre-order the books if you want to read them this spring. Thanks again to everybody that’s been reading — the best is yet to come.

Best,

We’re signing all weekend long next to Tony Moore and we have two panels on Saturday: a Marvel panel at 11 AM (room TBD) and a Comedy Writing Panel at 7 PM that evening in Room A. You will learn nothing, and leave the rooms much dumber than you entered, but by all means please join us.

On April 6 & 7 I’ll be appearing at Planet Comic Con in Kansas City.

I will have softcovers of Infinite Horizon to sell, and a VERY limited quantity of hardcovers at both these shows since the printer found a couple of boxes. If you’re interested — tweet at me @gerryduggan to give me a heads-up and I’ll know how many to bring. I might buy some Deadpool from a retailer pal to sell for cover if I can get them, but I probably won’t have much stock, so bring your own Deadpool if you’re interested in signatures.

I’ll be signing at Image & Marvel during San Diego Comic Con.

Some of you might only know me from my dickery on Twitter, while others are readers of Marvel’s Deadpool. So just in case you didn’t know, or needed a reminder, Phil Noto and I made a comic called The Infinite Horizon. We were nominated for an Eisner, and hope you check it out. It’s in comic shops, book stores on Amazon & available to download digitally.

And this summer it will be translated into French & Italian by Panini Comics.

Don’t believe me? Check out this gibberish tweet that says something to that effect.

It’s for my young son that I write this short essay. I hope it finds readers on both sides of the gun issue.

I wanted to begin by pointing out that there is nothing worse than the heinous murders of children that occurred at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

But that’s not true, is it? American mass murders are getting worse. What’s next? Kindergartners?

There are 40 parents sitting in quiet homes during what should be the happiest time of the year. Their closets stuffed with presents that will never make it under a Christmas tree. They will never hug their kids again.

America, your guns are not that important.

I’d like to counter a few of the more popular arguments I’ve been encountering lately.

“You’re politicizing dead kids. It’s too early to discuss gun control.”

No, it can’t be too early, because it’s already too late.

“The second amendment guarantees me the right to carry these weapons.”

Untrue. The second amendment to our constitution is very clear:

A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.

Firearms in this country are currently not well regulated. The laws vary state to state, and that is a big problem. Federal firearms laws must be tightened. Assault weapons and items like high capacity magazines are incompatible with Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness. They never were, and this is a mistake that needs to be corrected now. If our founding fathers could see what has been allowed to transpire they would surely shoot us dead. First, by pouring powder from a horn into a measure, and then dropping it down the barrel of their musket. Then they would shove a patched lead ball inside the weapon and finally try to aim and hit us with it. Likely they would have missed and needed to repeat this process.

“I need powerful assault weapons because I am a hunter.”

No, you don’t. Are you the world’s worst hunter? No, you’re not, but I’d like to introduce you to that person. There’s a video of a blind man shooting an elk dead. He’s the worst hunter. Be a sport about your sport. I’m willing to concede the definition of the weapons I want made illegal will be tough to nail down, but we all know what they are — they’re the weapons used to slaughter innocent people.

“I need these guns to defend my family and home.”

Do you live in the third act of a John Carpenter film? No, you don’t. You do not need assault weapons to protect your home and family. A handgun or shotgun is sufficient. How do I know this? I live in Southern California, our state bird is a bullet. Guns are everywhere. My friend sent an intruder back out of his apartment simply by cocking his revolver. Owning a firearm is something that you’re entitled to do. I don’t feel comfortable having a gun in a home with a young boy. Our society simply do not need the kind of immense firepower that is available today. Nobody likes hearing the term “government regulation” but that’s a more attractive phrase than “school massacre”.

“Criminals will always find a way to get these guns, you’re removing guns from a law-abiding citizen’s hands.”

To do nothing about our gun problem is once again, simply immoral. Americans will always have access to guns, but we need to set some limits. The laws we have on the books do not work. This point is no longer up for debate. Guns can be lost, stolen or sold. I’m willing to concede that I might trust you, the gun-owner, but what about your angry, misguided and ill son?

“Owning these guns makes me safer.”

False. If that were true Nancy Lanza would be alive today and her murderously insane son would be dead or in jail.

“If more people were armed we would all be safer.”

Also untrue. There are plenty of statistic to refute this argument, and it’s particularly invalid and loathsome when discussing schools. The teachers I had growing up needed help setting up their overhead projectors, so I’ll say no thank you to the notion of arming them. Let’s throw as much cold water on this as possible right now. Teachers don’t want to have the power of life and death strapped to their hip, and children don’t want to learn from someone that is armed.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly this country needs to address how it treats mental health. In America it’s much easier to buy a gun than it is to receive mental health treatment. That must change. It’s going to be a lot cheaper, easier and less heartbreaking to pay for preventive mental health than it is to clean up these bloody messes. Want to own a gun? Fine, first pass a mental health screening and gun safety course. Whatever it costs, it will still be a great bargain.

We need Washington’s help on this, but I’m afraid we’re going to be sorely disappointed by the quality of person we’ve elected to serve us. Washington is a joke. The NRA elects 4 of the 5 politicians that it throws money at. The people we need to influence were bought before they even went to Congress. The leadership that will birth strict new gun control laws is going to have to come from we, the people.

Laws are seldom perfect. Will these new laws and reforms stop every slaughter? Unfortunately not.

Will they help mitigate the consequences of armed and deranged people?

Of course they will.

To do nothing in the wake of Newtown makes us all accomplices to future mass murders. Direct action is now required to secure the safety and security of our society. That is not an overstatement. We cannot continue to let a powerful gun lobby tell us how this country is going to work, nor can we continue to ignore the mental health crisis that is spilling into our streets.

If you supported civilian ownership of these weapons when you arrived here I hope I’ve changed your mind because we need your voice too. It’s time for people to be accountable on this issue. Every person must take a stand for what’s right, or what’s profitable. We especially need to hear from gun owners who have changed their minds and realize that we must have tighter restrictions on guns.

I believe if we can have a constructive, rational conversation that there will be overwhelming support to change.

Every American must be vocal on this.

If this dialogue is successful, gun owners will not be waiting in fear for the day that the police to come and take away their assault weapons and high powered rounds because they will turn them in voluntarily. Because it’s the right thing to do. Because we, as a nation, will have decided that 20 first graders, and their teachers is enough.

Public pressure must be applied to politicians. If meaningful reforms are not enacted soon we may have to throw out the congressional leaders that stand in our way. That would mean waiting for the 2014 midterm elections if we wanted to get these desperately needed laws in front of President Obama, who is sure to sign them.

Are we really going to have to wait that long? I sincerely hope not.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. It’s undoubtedly the most important issue facing our country. I’m going to be learning more about the http://www.bradycampaign.org and I encourage you to do the same.

Front Toward Enemy: "Our Hearts Our Broken Today"

Front Toward Enemy: "Our Hearts Our Broken Today":
ruckawriter:

This is what’s in my head. If you don’t want to know, don’t read it. You have been warned.

I am facing tragedy for the second time this week. Facing tragedy as a human and as an American.

I nearly lost a colleague, a man whose work I admire, at the Clackamas Town Center shooting this past…

Update: a THREAT from my neighbors:
So, I came...

theyearofelan:

Update: a THREAT from my neighbors:

So, I came home from work and found this on my door. “Kristy,” or Ms. X. as I call her, has apparently been tipped off. So I guess she’s reading this now also so I’ll just switch tones and address her directly. Here we go:

Hi Kristy

Thanks for your note. I especially enjoyed the misspelling of my name and the super terrifying use of duct tape.

I guess things have been a little more complicated for the last few days for you than usual (although not much more, you and John fight ALL THE TIME), and I guess that’s partially due to me.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize.

I would like to, but unfortunately, I cannot, because I am completely without remorse. Your little squabbles with your gambling-addicted boyfriend have tormented me at all hours for two years, so if you’ve had a crappy couple of days, I guess we’re close to even.

I can tell you’re upset, but here’s the thing: You posted a threat on my door. Not cool, “Kristy.” I say you and I just go back to our old ways. I won’t bother you and maybe you and John can learn to use your “inside voices.”

Deal? I’ll consider it a deal unless I hear otherwise.

Love,

Elan

PS “Dead Man” is two words.

This week’s stack has Avengers, Hawkeye, All-New X-Men, Amazing Spider-Man, Deadpool, DD: End of Days and a;sldkfna;sldkfn SO GREAT!

via marvelentertainment:

Agent M, here for the third week in a row with a look at the stacks of comics & collections we get here at Marvel HQ.

It’s Friday, November 30, 2012 and we got our sweet stacks today. The single issues in the photo will be out Wednesday, December 5 in comic shops and on the Marvel digital comics store & app. The collections will be out across a number of weeks, I believe.

And here’s the stack of comics out Wednesday, November 28 if you missed ‘em!

Which of the issues in the photos are you most excited to read?

I wrote it with Brian Posehn for Tony Moore to draw, and it’s been a real dream project. We’ve been at this for a long time, and today we finally get to see what you think.

We’re lifelong fans of Marvel Comics, and have a special place in our heart for Deadpool. We’re counting on Deadpool’s fans to have our back and try us, but we’re hoping to pick up readers that don’t usually buy comics or buy the character.

There were certainly safer candidates that Marvel could have turned to write the book, but they went with Posehn & I. I’m hopeful that we can bring some of the folks that know us from TV, or Twitter and get you into comic shops.

If you don’t know where to find a comic shop near you call 1-888-Comic-Book or visit:

http://www.comicshoplocator.com/ If you would prefer digital it’s available on the Marvel app. Download the app here: http://marvel.com/mobile

The comic is just 2.99 and I can promise without hyperbole that it’s worth every cent just for Tony Moore’s art. Comic book readers know who Tony is, and should require no further enticement. You should stop reading and go by the book. I’m biased, but his Deadpool run is unquestionably his finest work. If you’re not familiar with the name Tony Moore, you’re undoubtedly familiar with his work — on The Walking Dead.

Tony is joined by color artist Val Staples, who arrives from Criminal and is similarly at the top of his game. The legendary Geof Darrow is the regular cover artist. His work always demands repeat reading. If you’ve not checked out Shaolin Cowboy, do so immediately, and pick up Hard Boiled & The Big Guy & Rusty The Boy Robot. Geof, like Tony has already left an indelible mark on pop culture. He was the talent that helped draw The Matrix into existence. He’s on loan from the Wachowski Starship, and we’re damn lucky to have him. They’ll call him back to his home planet someday, so enjoy him while you can.

I sincerely hope you’ve stopped reading because now I just have a few people to thank: my writing partner, Brian. Here’s to many more. Our editor Jordan D White who is smarter, funnier and more mustachioed than people can imagine. Thanks also to Joe Sabino, Nick Lowe, Arune Singh, James Viscardi, Jeanine Schaefer, Ryan Penagos, Rick Remender, Jason Aaron, Bendis, Fraction, many more I’m forgetting — and to everyone that buys the comic.

I want to give an especially big thank-you to Axel Alonso. I hope none of these wonderful, talented, hard-working people lose their jobs because of MarvelNow’s Deadpool.

If you’re still reading this, you’re either my wife or my parents. To my wife, I want to say sorry I’ve been working so many nights and weekends. It has been worth it! I love you and the boy so much. And to my parents: thanks for buying me comic books. Growing up in Marvel’s Universe made me a more fun and imaginative person in this one.

Regards,

If you were following coverage of Sandy last night, you may have seen photos of nurses and firemen transporting babies from the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at NYU’s hospital. As the sole breadwinner for my family I should be terrified, but truth be told, I’m very excited.

I was hired by Gavin Purcell to write sketches for two weeks on Attack Of The Show. That was more than five years ago. I racked up over a thousand hours of live TV experience at AOTS, which is not easy to get anymore. Gavin went on to Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, and even our show hosts changed but the show endured…until now. I got to work with the hardest working staff in Hollywood, made some friends for life and met some of my heroes along the way.

All good things come to and end. I’ll be helping to write and produce the show to the end, I hope. I’m ready for my next adventure. In addition to comedy, I also write comic books like The Simpsons, the Eisner nominated Image comic The Infinite Horizon and on November 7th I’m co-writing the new Deadpool series for Marvel with Brian Posehn.

If you’re staffing a show, or looking for a writer for TV, film, comics, or video games, please think of me. If you want to talk to me about a writing opportunity drop me a note at jobs(at)gerryduggan.com

Thanks in advance for thinking of me.

Sung to the Tune of “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” The Gary Portnoy song that opened Cheers:

Bomb making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got.

Dropping some weight to fit in your vest, sure would help a lot.

Wouldn’t you like to get to heaven?

up everybody that comes near.

Think how glad you’ll make Abu Nazir.

You wanna be where you can see,

the rubble and the flames.

You wanna be where nobody knows

Your name.

You wanna go where people know,

America’s drone war is a shame,
